Xanthohumol, a compound derived from hops, the bitter flavoring in beer, may prevent prostate cancer. A group of researchers, led by Clarissa Gerhäuser, PhD, group leader of cancer chemoprevention in the Division of Epigenomics and Cancer Risk Factors, German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany, found that xanthohumol blocks the effects of testosterone. Dr. Gerhäuser hopes additional research will demonstrate that xanthohumol prevents prostate cancer.
